Who & Whom

Today, we will understand how to use ‘who and whom’ in a sentence.

Today, we will understand them by all aspects so that you will not be confused when you use it and listen to it when someone else uses it.

Senerio 1st in which we will understand what is the role of ‘who’ and ‘whom’ in a sentence-

  • “Who” is used as the subject (the doer of the action). Like- Who is calling you?-Aapko kon bula rha h?

Whereas

  • “Whom” is used as the object (the receiver of the action). Like- Whom are you calling?- Aap Kisko bula rahe ho?

More Examples with Same Context:

  1. Who invited you to the party? (Subject: “Who” is doing the inviting.)
  2. Whom did you invite to the party? (Object: “Whom” is receiving the invitation.)

Now Senerio 2nd is when we understand that how ‘who’ replaces ‘whom’ in a sentence without changing contextual meaning and just by changing structure of a sentence.

You can replace “whom” with “who” in informal speech or writing, but you may need to adjust the sentence structure slightly. Since “whom” is an object pronoun and “who” is a subject pronoun, the sentence might sound grammatically incorrect if you replace it directly. Here are some ways to do it:

To rearrange the sentence

  •  Whom did you invite to the party? Is formal way to speak

and

  •  Who did you invite to the party to? Is informal way to speak

(You know”whom” is technically correct, but “who” is commonly used in casual speech.)

More examples

  • Formal: To whom should I speak?
  • Informal: Who should I speak to?
  • Formal: I don’t know with whom she was talking.
  • Informal: I don’t know who she was talking to.

So the notable thing about ‘who’ and ‘whom’ is that when you use ‘whom’ in a sentence, you use preposition in starting of a sentence ( like-With whom are you talking?) but when you use ‘who’ in a sentence, you use preposition at the end of the sentence (like- Who are you talking with?).

I hope this session was full of knowledge for you and you will now be able to use ‘who’ and ‘whom’ easily in your English.

Thank you!!!
